#Myth: Milk & Antibiotics

cow milk

It’s no secret to us really that cattle farms use antibiotics. But how much of it lingers into the milk that we buy at the grocery store?

The need for antibiotic treatment is used for many different reasons, such as…

  • Treating animals;

  • Preventing or managing certain diseases;

  • Promoting growth.

As a result, most people presume that milk made from cows will have traces of antibiotics in them, leading them to believe that they will become more resistant to antibiotics.

As such, Health Canada , over the years, has established very specific policies in order to help reduce this risk.

So though every concern is valid, here’s the reality of the situation.

1. Canadian Antibiotic Restrictions

While it is true that there is a use of antibiotics on farms ─ in Canada, there are extremely severe regulations that ensure that any application of antibiotics to treat dairy cows must then have the milk tested for traces of antibiotics.

In fact, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has the duty of monitoring the use of antibiotics and hormones, and it is by LAW that any milk with positive antibiotics results must be thrown away!

Of the 2.2 million trucks that pick-up milk each year at Canadian farms, there are fewer than 0.009% that test positive for antibiotics.

And let’s be honest, no smart farmer would risk the chance of having to deal with the costly financial penalties from faulty milk products!

2. Regulations on Organic Foods

Still not convinced? Try opting for organic foods instead! Foods that are labeled “organic” are prohibited from any use of added hormones or antibiotics.

However, before running to the organic grocery store, it’s important to remember that Health Canada reassures that any hormones or antibiotics used in milk production are SAFE. So don’t worry about the presence of antibiotics!

3. It’s Safe to Drink Milk in Canada

You are safe to buy as many dairy products as your heart desires! Milk and other dairy products also have a lot of great health benefits, such as…

It is a great source of calcium ─ which is important to help build strong & healthy bones!

It is packed with protein ─ a great food source to help with muscle building.

It also contains Vitamin D ─ just like calcium, plays a role in bone building.

Just don’t cry about it if ya spill it!
