Savory vs. Sweet Breakfast: Which is the Better Option?

As a dietitian, you probably already know my stance on the importance of starting the day with a nutritious breakfast. Whether you prefer a savory or sweet morning meal, at the end of they day, the key is to ensure that it provides the necessary nutrients to fuel your body for the day ahead.

Both savory and sweet breakfasts have their own set of nutritious benefits, but does one have precedence over the other?

In this article, we’ll revisit why eating something in the morning is essential and outweigh the benefits of both types of breakfast options.

The Importance of Eating Breakfast

Breakfast is often touted as the most important meal of the day, and for good reason! Eating in the morning kickstarts your metabolism, provides your body with energy and essential nutrients, and can improve cognitive function and mood. On the other hand, skipping breakfast can often lead to:

  • Decreased energy levels. Without fuel, you might find yourself feeling sluggish and tired.

  • Poor concentration. Hunger can impair cognitive functions, making it harder to focus at a task at hand.

  • Overeating later in the day: Skipping breakfast can lead to increased hunger and overeating, particularly of less healthy options.

Savory vs Sweet Breakfast Options

For a quick answer, savory breakfasts generally provide more balance & satiety in comparison to sweet types.

Savory breakfasts often include eggs, lean meats, or legumes, providing a substantial amount of protein that aids in muscle repair and growth. They also generally include ingredients such as avocado, olive oil or nuts & seeds which offer healthy fats that support heart health and help keep you full longer by delaying the absorption of glucose in the bloodstream.

Sweet breakfasts often involve fruits, yogurt, nuts & seeds and cereals products which all contribute to a balanced meal. However, depending on how they’re assembled they can sometimes lack a proper balance of nutrients. More specifically, they tend to be higher in carbohydrates and added sugars and lower in protein and healthy fats, leading to a quicker spike and subsequent drop in blood sugar levels. As a result, you may find yourself feeling hungry or sluggish even after having eaten breakfast.

Breakfast Ideas to Switch Up the Variety

Remember, eating something in the morning is always better than skipping breakfast, as it sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. Here are a few of my favorite breakfast styles to help satisfy my need for both moods:

Savory

  1. 🍞Avocado Toast with Eggs

    • Whole grain toast topped with mashed avocado, a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds, and a cooked egg. Add a side of color such as cherry tomatoes, greens or a fresh fruit for extra fiber and vitamins.

  2. 🍳Veggie Omelet

    • Omelet made with veggies such as spinach, bell peppers, and onions, served with a side of whole grain toast and a small portion of fresh fruit.

Sweet

  1. 🍨 Yogurt Parfait

Greek yogurt layered with mixed berries, a handful of granola, and a drizzle of honey. Sprinkle some flaxseeds or chia seeds for added fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

  2. 🥣 Oatmeal with Nuts and Fruit

  • Cooked oatmeal topped with sliced banana, a handful of mixed berries, and a sprinkle of walnuts. Add a spoonful of almond butter for extra protein and healthy fats.

Bottom line: Both savory and sweet breakfasts have their place in a varied diet, however aiming for a balanced meal is crucial.

Whether you prefer savory or sweet breakfasts, the most important factor is to ensure that your meal is balanced and nutritious. By including protein, fiber, and healthy fats, you can create a breakfast that keeps you energized and satisfied throughout the morning. So, enjoy your breakfast and start your day on the right foot!
